Using radio frequency technology, wireless LAN’s transmit and receive data over the air, minimizing the need for wired connections. Therefore, wireless LAN’s combine broadband data connectivity with user mobility.
Who should use a wireless LAN?
A VPN will benefit organizations who have multiple sites and require each site to be connected to allow the fast efficient flow of data. VPN’s have no geographic restrictions, allowing for highly dispersed sites to be linked together.
- employees who need mobility within a building and need access to files stored on a network.
- any business where cabling is not an option – for example listed buildings, leased or temporary space.
- buildings that are in sight of each other where a wide area network would normally be used. Wireless LAN technology allows cost savings over wired LAN’s, by avoiding expensive trenches, leased lines and right-of-way issues.
What are the restrictions?
Without leased lines connecting each site, you will be unable to take advantage of further technologies such as Voice over IP.
